Teaching: Principles of Environmental Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering Science, Air Pollution Control Technology, Biological Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Microbiology.
 
Research: Biological processes for wastewater treatment, respirometric methods for determining extant biodegradation kinetics, biosensors for early warning, biodegradation modeling, biological nutrient removal, nitrogen and phosphorus recovery using struvite precipitation, anaerobic bioconversion processes for industrial and agribusiness byproducts, temperature phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD), anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), and novel anaerobic applications.

Industrial Experience

  • Parsons Engineering Science (formerly Engineering Science, Inc.) Jan. 1988 - May 1990
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Senior Environmental Engineer. Designed interim and permanent extensions to the Mafraq Sewage Treatment Works, an 82 mgd wastewater reclamation facility including primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment with full effluent reuse.
 
Fairfax, Virginia. Project Engineer. Lead process engineer for the design of a new 7.5 mgd surface water treatment plant, involving rapid mix, flocculation/sedimentation, filtration, and eight separate chemical feed systems. Provided preliminary through final design documents.
 
  • Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant, Baltimore, Maryland, July 1984 - Aug 1987
    • Operations Engineer. Participated in 201 Facility Plan implementation, process selection, design review, and plant start-up. Projects included computer automated activated sludge facility construction, tertiary filtration design, and biological nutrient removal process selection.
