1. Proposal number: 10 2. Should this proposal be considered for the Best Proposal prize? (yes/no): No 3. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the overall organization/clarity of the proposal? (1-10): 8 4. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the overall project idea? (1-10) : 7 * Overall, is the proposal clear, concise, and well-organized? This proposal is clear most of the time but is annoying at times. The grammar of the proposal distracted from the idea of the proposal. However, most of the rest of the paper was pretty clear and fairly easy to understand. This paper was pretty concise, but it did not meet the imposed page limit. I feel that the paper was concise enough to understand, but more information could have been included about research that wasn't actually an experiment about out-of-body experiences. This paper was fairly well-organized. It followed a consistent pattern and was predictable. The flow of the information in the paper made sense. This said, it would have been nice to know how the rest of the paper was going to flow after the introduction. Most papers include some kind of summary of what will be discussed before it is actually discussed. * Does the proposal meet the posted proposal guidelines? This proposal does not meet all of the posted guidelines. First off, it is not the correct length (though I feel it may not need to be longer, it just does not meet the 10 page requirement). It also does not state how many subjects will be experimented on. For each experiment it does not appear that “success” is explicitly stated. * How does the project idea fit within the framework of Developmental Robotics? This project can be definitively related to the framework of developmental robotics. One reason for this is that it involves the sensory modalities. Humans will be tested with artificially created sensations. This is also related to self-detection, because an alteration of the senses may cause the subject to feel things that are not actually related to their body. * Describe what you like BEST about the project idea. I like this idea because it is an interesting concept. Tricking a human into thinking that their body is something that it really is not can cause some interesting reactions. It is particularly interesting because they will feel something that does not even affect their nerves. I also like that the idea is also strongly tied to the idea of self-detection, which is very important to developmental robotics. * Describe what you like LEAST about the project idea. I do not like this idea because it is not an original idea. This is something that has already been done by somebody else and is going to be done in a very similar manner. Being able to reproduce the results of others (or not, and disproving them) is important to the science community. However, I feel that it is easier to reproduce an idea than it is to come up with an entirely new method and solving a new problem. * Does it seem doable in the remaining time? I think completing this project in the remaining amount of time could be difficult. Preparing the experiment for people to use and actually experimenting with people is very time consuming. This does not include tabulating the results of the surveys they have. A system also needs to be prepared that allows movement of a camera. If the authors can schedule time in the lab and quickly find volunteers then I think they may be able to complete their project. * Does it seem too difficult? I think the project may be difficult to complete (mostly because of the time constraint) but is possible with enough effort. I believe one of the largest problems will be finding volunteers that will want to spend a fair amount of time in the described experiments. Another problem that may arise is with the construction of a movement system for the camera. It may not be a huge problem, but it is still a problem that could be underestimated. * Are there any major details left out? There are not any major details left out except for the number of subjects that will be experimented on. * Does the idea rely upon technologies that are not currently available? The idea relies upon technologies that are able to made, but must be prepared for this experiment. * Do you have any suggestions for improvement? The actual writing style for the final project paper should be better than that of the proposal. It seemed like there was too much white space and the poor grammar was annoying at times. Additionally, the page requirement should also be met. * Do you have any suggestions for related work that should be cited? I think that more relevant research should be found. Research about self-detection could probably be included because that is part of what is taking place in this experiment. The subject acquires an altered version of “self” through certain conditions they must be in.
